From idea to data exploration to project
The U-BIOPRED Alliance has piloted the concept of a tranSMART ‘Masterclass’ over the past year. What has been particularly interesting is that while the Masterclass was meant to be a means of providing education on how transMART works this is not the most important value of these Masterclasses.
During some of the first Masterclasses, as a way of testing practical examples, a live exercise of exploratory analyses using the analytics in tranSMART was carried out. That exercise led to more ideas and deeper collaborations. It then resulted in the formation of a couple of fast-mover projects that have been drawing in even more collaborators. The exploration of the dataset becomes an engine for collaboration.
This type of interaction is what has resulted in the fact that U-BIOPRED remains a viable collaboration eight years after the funding has ended. I have learned recently that very few IMI projects achieve such a long-standing state of continuing collaboration.
“It is surprising how many different facets emerge when you sit down in front of a dataset with a diverse group.” Ian Adcock, Coordinator of the U-BIOPRED project.
